Knit Nerd, Ravelry and Bella's Mittens

So my daughter called me a Knit Nerd (Knit Knerd?...Nah). OK, so I am probably way behind the times here, but I just got my Ravelry membership. Aaaahhh, Ravelry. I am still figuring out what can be done on there. I feel like I might just be able to spend about 12 hours a day on the site (with another 12 hours for knitting).

So, I would like to start knitting Bella's Mittens (from the Twilight movie) for my daughter, Sam (yes, she's the one who called me a Knit Nerd and I still want to knit for the little punk!). I love the way they look, they are so chunky and soft looking BUT, I have a huge confesstion to make. I HAVE NEVER CABLED. And, to be honest, cabling kind of scares me. I want to. I really, really want to. But the thought of that DPN or cabling needle just hanging there in space with a bunch of stitches just waiting to slip off and mess up the whole thing just scares the hell out of me. Yes, I know this is ridiculous. I have been knitting for five freaking years and have even started to write my own patterns a little (obviously ones that don't involve any cables). I have done a mock cable twist and I hated it (Sam's Headband - see below, will post pattern later). The tension was so screwy and I couldn't wait to be done.
I felt this way about intarsia at first. I tried to figure it out from books and web patterns and would end up just giving up on the idea before I started. When I finally visited my Grandma Millie and she showed me how to do it, I remember being like "Really, that's it? It's so easy!" So maybe this is the same. I just need to screw up my courage. Maybe after I finish Brianna's hat......
